Drakes Bay Historic & Archeological District National Historic Landmark Dedication Ceremony

Point Reyes National Seashore cordially invites you to attend the Drakes Bay Historic & Archeological District National Historic Landmark Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Dedication: 11 am at Limantour Beach (Directions from Bear Valley Visitor Center)
Reception: Following the Dedication Ceremony in the Red Barn Classroom at Bear Valley. (Directions)

The dedication program will feature speakers and an unveiling of the National Historic Landmark plaque. The site provides a spectacular view of the remarkably unchanged Drakes Bay landscape, designated as a Landmark in 2012 and protected in perpetuity within Point Reyes National Seashore.

Marco Meniketti, Professor of Anthropology and Historical Archeology, San Jose State University

In the last quarter of the 16th century, the Coast Miwok people of Point Reyes met the first Europeans to land on the shores of Drakes Bay. Englishman Francis Drake and his crew most likely camped on these shores for six weeks while repairing the Golden Hind in 1579. Sixteen years later, a storm grounded and sank the Manila Galleon, San Agustin in the bay, while her Spanish captain, Rodrigo Cermeno, and his men watched helplessly from the shore.
